Liner Notes: Two actors play the same role to demonstrate how Shakespeare develops a character and the multiplicity of ways in which his characters can be understood. David Suchet and Patrick Stewart approach Shylock from different vantage points and use different means to express his character. How does he express his alienation? He measures everything in terms of money: will he dress shabbily so as not to waste money on his clothes, or dress smartly for the status he thinks he has? What are his motives? What is he really like? Given the same text and the same direction, the different readings of the part demonstrate the infinite variety of Shakespeare's work.
